Good News About Queensland’s E-Bike Laws

Great News!

You may have seen recent news stories about Queensland’s proposed new e-bike laws — and we know some of it has caused many of our customers personal concern and confusion. I want to write to you personally today with some very reassuring news.

Your electric tricycle is safe, legal, and fully protected. Please read on — we think you will find this very welcome news indeed.

What the Queensland Parliament decided on 8 May 2026

The parliamentary committee reviewing the new e-mobility laws has formally recommended special exemptions for electric tricycles, adaptive devices, and cargo bikes — recognising that these vehicles have different and legitimate needs that standard rules do not cover.

They also recognise that electric tricycles, by Australian Standards regulations, do not need to comply with e-bike regulations because, in simple terms, a tricycle is not a bicycle according Federal Law. (AS 15194 clause 3.2)

Here are the three things that matter most to you as a Trike Bike customer:

1. Your tricycle will NOT be seized or crushed.

The seizure and crushing powers in the new laws are targeted at illegal, high-powered electric motorbikes being ridden dangerously by young people — not at law-abiding riders on compliant electric tricycles. Your tricycle was purchased legally and is used responsibly. You have nothing to worry about, EVER.

2. You will NOT need a driver’s licence.

The committee has specifically recommended exemptions from any licence requirement for people who cannot obtain a licence due to age, disability, or a medical condition — but who are perfectly capable of safely riding their electric tricycle. This covers the vast majority of our customers, and we are very pleased the government has listened to our submissions and suggestions.

3. Bigger motors on tricycles are understood and accepted.

The committee formally recognised that electric tricycles and cargo bikes are heavier vehicles that genuinely require more motor power to move safely — and recommended specific exemptions to reflect this. The government heard the industry’s message loud and clear: a tricycle is not an illegal motorbike, and should never have been treated as one.

What this means for you

Keep riding. Nothing is changing for you right now.

The new laws are not yet in force — they are still being debated in parliament and a final response from the government is expected over the coming months. Even when they do come into effect, the exemptions recommended for electric tricycles, adaptive devices, and people with disabilities or medical conditions mean that Trike Bike customers will continue to ride completely unaffected.

Your electric tricycle is giving you exactly what it was designed to give you — independence, freedom, exercise, and the ability to get to the doctor, the shops, or a friend’s home on your own terms.

That’s not going to change, EVER.

A personal note from Michael at Trike Bike

“We have been following this legislation very closely and working with industry groups and government departments to make sure the voices of our customers were heard. The committee’s recommendations show that the government understands what an electric tricycle actually is — a safe, stable, valuable tool for independence — and not a dangerous motorbike. I want you to feel completely confident getting on your tricycle today, tomorrow, and every day. That is exactly what it is there for.”
