CHILL Expedition – Day 19

Hello dear followers for the final time,

It’s with a heavy heart that I write what will be the final update of this incredible journey. What started as an ambitious expedition one month ago from Brisbane to Melbourne aboard a Trike Bike CHILL has now reached its unexpected conclusion in Wollongong.

Over the past month, this journey has pushed both rider and machine far beyond what would normally be expected of any tricycle. We have ridden through relentless weather, including heavy rain, storms and even hail, tackled rough dirt roads, uneven terrain, and even sections more suited to four-wheel-drive vehicles than any tricycle. This was never a gentle ride — it was a true endurance test.

Along the way, the trike performed exceptionally well under conditions that most riders would never encounter. However, as with any expedition taken to the absolute limits, we eventually experienced a critical mechanical issue. A significant bearing failure occurred, and despite every effort from Michael and myself, along with several days spent working through solutions at a local bike shop, the damage proved too complex to repair and unfortunately I simply ran out of time and couldn't wait for the necessary spare parts to be supplied from the manufacturer.

It’s important to understand that this is not a failure of the tricycle in the traditional sense. Rather, it highlights exactly what this expedition set out to achieve — pushing the equipment well beyond normal use, into extreme and unforgiving environments. In many ways, this has been a success, providing real-world testing that simply cannot be replicated in controlled conditions.

Not every adventure has a perfect ending, and not every expedition finishes at its intended destination. But that does not mean it has failed. Quite the opposite — this has been one of the longest and most demanding tricycle expeditions ever undertaken in Australia, and that alone is something to be incredibly proud of.

Although the trike journey has come to an end, the spirit of the adventure continues. Thanks to Andrew from Riding for Life Bike Shop in Fairy Meadow, who generously offered me a normal push bike to use, I will now continue the journey towards Melbourne on two wheels. For me, the goal of reaching Melbourne remains alive and still within my allocated time schedule.

Looking back over the past month, I am left with nothing but deep respect and admiration for the people of Australia. Everywhere I went, I was met with kindness, generosity, and genuine support. Australians are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always willing to help — often going out of their way to make sure I was safe and looked after.

In about one weeks time, when I leave Australia, I already know this will not be my last visit. This country, with its vast landscapes and amazing people, has left a lasting impression on me. I will be back.

One final comment… I have been filming this incredible adventure throughout my journey, with the intention of sharing daily updates along the way. Unfortunately, the internet connectivity in rural Australia made this impossible. However, once I return home, I will produce a condensed movie version of this journey and release it through the usual channels. Please keep an eye out for its release over the next month.
